This blog is dead [Apr. 5th, 2007|05:03 pm]
Now shifted to Tumblr, which is much sexier and doesn't have the really really irritating focus changes when loading the HTML typing interface

So shift your RSS readers over to http://tomgodber.tumblr.com/

Patents [Mar. 30th, 2007|11:46 am]
Apparently, over half the world's top 20 patent filers were mobile companies in 2006...

SE Push For JSR Implementation World Record [Mar. 28th, 2007|02:08 pm]
Sony Ericsson have implemented the entire MSA umbrella set of APIs and found space for an accelerometer API on the new, US only, Z750
In some ways ridiculously OTT, in other ways very cool...

New Blackberry APIs [Mar. 28th, 2007|08:25 am]
Apparently RIM are opening up some new APIs for the Blackberry - but nothing too specific on which devices have them...

Standard JSRs:
  • MMAPI with MP3, WAV, WMA, AAC, AMR audio and camera access
  • File API (JSR 75) - PIM half of the JSR already supported...
  • Location APIs (JSR 179) if you have a GPS built-in or attached to Bluetooth
  • At some point in the future:
    • MMS (SMS already supported)
    • 3D
    • SVG
Proprietary APIs (which'll probably need signatures from RIM to use):
  • Map API
  • Ringtone/wallpaper/camera APIs

Widgets, Ajax and eyeballs [Mar. 22nd, 2007|02:30 pm]
Open Gardens is working on a FAQ to explain that pressing issue, what is the relationship between Ajax and widgets?  All sounds rather buzzword heavy really: apparently Ajax is 'Asynchronous I/O and rendering' - well I could make a case for a hell of a lot of much older technologies being that, but anyway...
Did mention that the technology is starting to fragment already, didn't mention how many people can use these technologies (er, not many?)

Mobile Ads [Mar. 22nd, 2007|10:01 am]
MobHappy has a reasonably balanced opinion on a survey revealing no-one wants mobile ads, givent heir (stated) bias.
Really, as Russel suggests (give or take), it's all down to what you put behind the ad - give the people something they want else you just piss them off and paid money to create a negative impresssion of your brand.

Mobile Confusion [Mar. 18th, 2007|10:17 am]
A couple of interesting semi-related posts on mobile web vs mobile apps, and internal vs external app environments.  Both pointing to a general level of confusion, which is of course where specialist consuktancies with a clear vision can make all the difference ;)

Free Content For All [Mar. 14th, 2007|12:50 pm]
Because paid content will die, apparently.  The Flash Lite reference is gratuitous and irrelevant, but the trend is quite possible...

T-Mobile US Locks Down Networking [Feb. 28th, 2007|11:27 am]
T-Mobile US actively blocks MIDP from networking, presumbaly because that would network usage and in a flat-tarif world data usage is suddenly the enemy.

Not so much demand for 3D games on mobiles [Feb. 13th, 2007|08:17 am]
Shouldn't really be news, but m:metrics are finding that mobile game players want short term distractions like card and puzzle games or retro games, and not fully immersive 3D games.  I always prefer nicely designed 2D graphics on small screens, but I can envision a few places where 3D could be used effectively - just not to replicate Doom or whatever.

Mobile Data [Feb. 11th, 2007|06:27 pm]
Interesting post on mobile data segmentation, saying that capturing 10% of the market for any particular mobile data product is actually pretty impressive.  I'd tend to agree, which I guess ties in with a company philosophy of always supporting every device possible, because if you artificially cut your potential market share down by coding badly, who knows whether there'll be enough overlap of handsets to interested customers?

Cheeky [Jan. 11th, 2007|12:57 pm]
$500 + minimum 2 year contract to get one, but you only get 1 year warranty. Hmmm.  In 2.5+ year's time, I wonder how many users will feel hip and cutting edge with a GPRS/EDGE phone as they finish paying for it?

Moto Demo New UI [Jan. 11th, 2007|12:53 pm]
The rumours were true, Moto have been writing a new UI on top of their new JUIX Linux platform and a single ARM11 processor, and it just debuted at CES.  Not much to see from the pics except:
  1. The centre soft key menu thing has gone (great)
  2. The big ugly font may have been toned down (even better)
  3. They need to get some graphic designers to polish it before launch.
Good news for them though, have to hope the changes run deep and it's actually worth using.

Customers Don't Want Adverts On Phones [Jan. 6th, 2007|12:37 pm]
Shocking news.  Apparently they won't even appreciate paying to download adverts when the adverts subsidise free content they didn't even want.  Whatever next...
